Some people might groan when they hear the words "high school musical". No, I don't mean that's the name of it; high school students performed it. Today my hosts and I went to a live performance of Fiddler on the Roof by Heritage Academy Charter School. This was not a dumbed down script for kids but the entire 3 hour performance. The students made the sets, costumes, performed all the vocals, AND provided a live orchestra for the entire production. The acting was spot on and carried the full range of emotions you might experience watching the "real deal". It was the real deal. The choreography of dance, including the bottle dance, gymnastic moves, the Russian dance were all carried out entirely on a very small stage and without mishap. Some scenes the actors entered and exited from the back of the auditorium drawing the audience further into the story. The "dream" scene that Tevye manufactures to convince his wife that Tzeitel should not marry Lazar Wolf has to have been the most spectacular scene of the play as far as choreography. We still aren't sure how they pulled off Lazar Wolf's former wife moving around up in the air. Part of the mystery. A great overall performance with 2 thumbs up; very much worth the $5 gate fee.

Wow, that sounds wonderful! Just think if you hadn't had the mishap with the broken mirror you would have missed this. Your writing is very good as well.

ReplyDeleteMost high schools put on at least one performance every year. In our area, the schools usually do one play and one musical each year. I, too, have been remiss in not taking advantage of the talent in my area. This will be changed in future.
